What is an API?

The Application Programming Interface?

(What is it and what can i do with it)

More and more devices are "smart" and have their own app(lication) to operate it via your smartphone or tablet. To prevent that you need more and more app to control all your  devices you might want to check out whether there is an API availble for the product you want to use. Via this API 3rd party apps (like the FIBARO APP) can also control the device.

A great example is SONOS. With its own app you choose what music you want to hear, and you can change the volume. When you leave the house you don't want to use the smarthome app to turn off the lights and the SONOS app to stop te music. With an API you can program the Home Center that it sents the 'stop' command via an API.

And when you come back home and open the door, the music starts to play again! How cool is that. No more coming home into a dark and quiet house.

And even if you yourself are not a programmer, then the availability of an API is an important reason to choose this product with the API. An available API is a requirement to link all smart devices in your home together.

Examples of popular products with API:

- The mentioned SONOS music system
- Philips HUE (you need the Bridge)
- The Netatmo station.
- The Nest Thermostat

And you cannot only send commands through an API call (as it is called), an API can also request information. Think of the actual volume of the SONOS speaker, or the current room temperature in the case of the NEST thermostat.
