including, excluding and association of Z-wave module

What does the words include, exclude and associate mean?

Z-wave products work together in a Z-wave network, managed by a primairy Z-wave controller (gateway). A typical Z-wave intallation consists of a primary controller and 1 or more Z-wave modules (actors and sensors). New actors and sensors need to be included to a controller

Inclusion (Adding a Z-wave module to a primary controller)

A Z-wave compatible module can be added to a Z-wave network via inclusion. When included it can sent information to the controller (sensor) or it can execute a command (actor). For example switching on a light. These actions are usually executed throught the primary controller. When the controller is busy it can take a few seconds before the command is executed.
Inclusion is initiated on the gateway (via the software interface). When the controller is in listening mode, you can perform an inclusion action on the module. this is usually done by a tripple push on the inclusion (B-)button, or pressing the on-of switch within 1,5 seconds. More information about including module into a Fibaro controller click here.

Association (Direct connection between Z-wave modules)

Within a Z-wave network we can create a direct connection between 2 modules. For example a motion sensor and a light switch. Association is mostly done from the primary controller (sometimes you can associate 2 modules without a controller), so the modules need to be included in the controller first. A big advantage is the fact that once two modules are associated, they dont need the primary controller, which means very fast reaction times. And when te controller is off line, the association still works. A disadvantage is the fact that you cannot a condition (only switch lite on when dark). Association are perfect for bathroom ventilation systems (association between humidity sensor and ventilator switch) or for wireless hotel switches (when you want to use more than 1 switch to turn on a lite).

Exclusion (removing Z-wave devices from a Z-wave network)

Exclusion is the opposite of inclusion its the kingsway of removing devices from a Z-wave controller. Usually you can also remove a device from the software by just clicking on the module in the sofware an remove it. But due to the Mesh-table (where all modules are listed and where the primary controller keeps track of which modules is neighbours with) we recommend that you do it the official way. When you have a problem to include a device and it wont work, try to exclude it first. It might sound stupid, but exclusion is also a reset process. If for whatever reason the module thinks its include to whatever controller, you can reset this by an exclude command!
Exclusion is initiated on the gateway (via the software interface). When the controller is in listening mode, you can perform an exclusion action on the module. this is usually done by a tripple push on the inclusion (B-)button, or pressing the on-of switch within 1,5 seconds.
