Z-wave opentherm connection

Z-wave Opentherm Thermostat | Soldering in style

OpenTherm (short: OT) is a communication protocol used in smart heating units that cannot only switch on or of, they can also modulate the amout of heat produced. In other words, it cannot only burn 100%, it can burn at lower percentage, just as much as needed.

In Europe more and more companys make heating devices that communicate via the openthem protocol. this means many different thermostats can be used to control the kettle. On this website you'll find a list of supported heating devices:

Schelte Bron has developed an interface that allows you to control the Opentherm device via  USB or LAN Opentherm. The website of the developer is found here

Figure: Opentherm interface by Schelte Bron

The interface is placed between the thermostat and the heating device that communicates via the OpenTherm protocol. Only when needed the device will react. The result is a good functioning opentherm device with Z-wave connection.
DIY and complete sets are sold here.

To be able to use the thermostat, you need to update both the firmware of the interface and the USB LAN/wifi adapter.

When you connect the device to the system, its possible to test it by the testprogramma made by Otmonitor.

For Vera 3 / lite Vera and Vera Edge Z-Wave controllers is a plugin developed that can communicate with this interface, thus become the link between the OpenTherm thermostat and the Z-wave base. In the web interface of the Veralite / 3 / Edge can be installed OpenTherm gateway plugin. It is important that you enter the correct IP address + port interface . A detailed explanation of this plugin can be found here
